Since the year 2004, the company GKR HOLDING a.s. has been focusing on business activities in West Africa, particularly in the Republic of Benin, which is a country situated by the Gulf of Guinea and it covers the area of c. 112 000 km2 with a population of 8 million people.

The Republic of Benin became a very interesting territory from the business point of view having a dynamically developing business market with a huge space for a large number of business activities both in the sense of delivery of finished products and development of industrial production, and in the fields of development of new infrastructure, energy industries, waste management and agriculture.

At the beginning, the company GKR HOLDING a.s. had operated its business activities in Benin itself through its business department, however, due to increasing volume of business activities and development of new long-term projects, the company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. was purchased for the purpose of coordination of business in West Africa, and all activities were transferred to this company.

UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. has been cooperating from the beginning of its business activity in Benin namely with companies GKR BENIN s.a. and SBI HOLDING s.a. with the seat in Cotonou that are under 100 % ownership of Czech subjects. There has been established a tight cooperation with the company DEC GROUPE s.a. in Niger. The company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. cooperates in the Czech Republic with all Czech producers who are interested in business market in West Africa – among all for example VEBA BROUMOV a.s., TATRA a.s. and ZETOR a.s.

Business partners of the company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. can be nowadays found all over the world, mainly in India, USA, China and of course in Europe where the most intensive business contacts has been established with companies from Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine and Russia.

The company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. is in formal contact with the Government of Benin, regularly and actively participates in official visits of delegations from the Republic of Benin in the Czech Republic. It is worth mentioning that UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. is a co-founder of Czech-Beninese Joint Chamber of Commerce with the seat in Prague (see www.benin-komora.cz).

Business activities of the company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. can be divided into several groups according to their characteristics whereas cooperation with Czech partners is preferred, mainly with manufacturers of Czech products who are actively represented by UNIVERZA Praha, s.r.o. in cooperation with local partners on local markets.

Business commodities - mainly cement, fertilizers and food products such as flour that is delivered to Africa in cooperation with Czech mills UNIMILLS a. s. On the contrary, UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. participates in export of agricultural products, mainly cashew nuts, from West Africa.

Commercial representation - besides other Czech producers, the following companies belong among the most important partners in business activities, mainly VEBA Broumov a.s. representing one of the world's biggest producers of African brocade; TATRA a.s., which is a producer of towcars; and the company ZETOR a.s.- a producer of agricultural tractors.

Construction works – the company UNIVERZA Praha, s.r.o. benefits from its partnership in GKR HOLDING a.s. Group. In cooperation with its sister companies that focus on construction and ground works, production of steel constructions and drilling and geological works, it can offer extensive knowledge and experience from all these disciplines which is obvious in cooperation with local partners in West Africa.

Investment projects – the company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. has already brought to West Africa several potential Czech investors from different fields of business who were immediately interested in establishing themselves within the territory, and nowadays preparatory phase of several long-term investment projects is being finalized. Project "Agriculture", which is in its initial phase, can be mentioned for example. Other projects will be updated after their official launching.

Within the frame of its activities in West Africa, the company UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o provided full service for preparation and participation in tender for elaborating of Study of Practicability of Railway Cotonou - Dosso for Czech association of companies GKR HOLDING a.s., METROPROJEKT PRAHA a.s. and SUDOP PRAHA a.s. The tender was published by organization AFRICARAIL (for more information see www.africarail.org in which the states Benin, Niger, Togo and Burkina Faso participate. The association of Czech companies succeeded in the demanding tender, and the contract was signed on the 13 October 2009 in Niamey, the capital of Niger. The work on the project, in which UNIVERZA Praha s.r.o. actively participates, is contracted for the period of 8 months, and its results will be contractual documents for tender concerning execution of this project whereas further Studies concerning new railways will be developed so that the railway could in the future adequately cover the whole area of the four above mentioned states.
